What is WPC ETA Certification?

The WPC (Wireless Planning & Coordination) wing, established in 1952 and operating under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, serves as India’s national regulatory authority for radio communication. It currently operates through the Saral Sanchar Online Portal.

Any product featuring radio or wireless communication technologies—whether imported, manufactured, or marketed in India—requires an Equipment Type Approval (ETA) certificate issued by WPC India. This applies to devices that use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi (wireless LAN), Zigbee (small digital radios), RFID (radio frequency identification), and other similar wireless technologies.

Obtaining a WPC ETA certificate is mandatory for businesses involved in the sale, import, or manufacture of wireless-enabled devices in India. Both manufacturers and importers of such devices must secure this certification to comply with national regulations.

ETA Self-Declaration Certificate and Approval

An ETA Self-Declaration Certificate is required for devices that operate within the de-licensed frequency bands. However, this certification is applicable only to products that meet the following criteria:

  • They are exempt from licensing as per the Import Policy set by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

  • They operate within de-licensed frequency bands.

Examples of such products include mobile phones, laptops, smartwatches, microphones, earphones, and similar wireless-enabled devices. Any product falling within the scope defined by the relevant authority must obtain an ETA certificate. Additionally, a Radio Frequency (RF) test report from an accredited laboratory is a mandatory prerequisite for WPC ETA registration.

Once granted, the ETA certificate permits the sale, distribution, and import of the product within India. For imports, an undertaking along with the ETA certificate must be submitted to the Customs authorities.

Securing an ETA Self-Declaration Certificate can be a detailed and complex process. Therefore, seeking professional guidance is highly recommended. Certifications Bay offers expert compliance services, making them a reliable partner in ensuring smooth and timely WPC certification.

How to Obtain WPC ETA Approval in India

To secure a WPC ETA (Equipment Type Approval) certificate for devices operating in de-licensed frequency bands, a comprehensive test report must be submitted to the WPC authority. This report, prepared by an accredited and recognized laboratory, serves as proof that the device complies with the required technical standards.

At CertificationsBay, we assist clients by facilitating the testing process and ensuring the test report is in the correct format for submission. With extensive experience in securing WPC (ETA) approvals for IT and electronic devices, we serve both Indian and international businesses looking to launch wireless-enabled products in the Indian market.
